The Crypt of Marie Laveau, as Tintype, New Orleans, 2014

2014 — Tintype photographs, 4.25x5.5" ea.

Produced with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

A series of tintypes featuring the resting place of Marie Laveau, 'Voodoo Queen' of New Orleans. This work's obvious pun of showing a dead medium on a dead medium gives way to metaphors of mortality as technological obsolescence, and of immortality as mere notoriety. The photographs are full of evidence that even our ways of marking death are themselves physical (scrawled 'XXX's; mementos and souvenirs left for the dead), and therefore tentative, vulnerable, and itinerant.

Special thanks to the Tintype Studio.
