The spirits of coopers (labourers who recondition and rejuvenate whisky barrels) are said to haunt the Glenfiddich Distillery's warehouses. In this case, the ghost cooper is a robot inside a reclaimed whisky cask, and it knocks at the sides of its cell when the temperature or barometric pressure drops--meteorological phenomena often associated with spooky happenings. One such robo-cask is installed inside "Warehouse No. 1", Glenfiddich's first storage house, which was completed in 1886. "The Lost Cooper's Cask" thereby continues and reinforces the mythology from which it springs, while offering an ominous illustration of the uncanny valley we enter when robots replace workers.
